When Life Hurts, Stop Clinging to It - The Philosophy of Epictetus
In this video, we provide an overview of the key teachings of the ancient Greek philosopher Epictetus that remain deeply relevant today. We explore how Epictetus' emphasis on letting go of attachment leads to inner freedom and resilience, even in the face of adversity.
Epictetus realized over 2000 years ago that it's easy in our busy modern lives to become stressed by chasing things outside our control. He offered practical wisdom on focusing inwardly instead. We summarize his central tenet of differentiating between what we can and cannot control.
By accepting this dichotomy, we can avoid suffering caused by clinging to external things. We outline specific Stoic principles and techniques Epictetus recommended to live virtuously with equanimity, such as letting go of possessions, not depending on others' opinions, accepting rather than resisting reality, focusing on integrity, being present in the moment, taking a higher perspective, and cultivating courage.

Being productive financially isn’t the only point. Women need to know a man will work on themselves, on a relationship, on building a life. Yes. That also requires a man to be financially stable because life costs money. Women who want to get married and have children know this. That doesn’t make all women gold diggers. Generosity isn’t merely throwing money around. It’s unselfishness. A selfish person only attends to their needs and ignores the needs of others. One can be generous with time, with mercy, with respect, with kindness, with attention. There are a lot of narcissists in the world. Both sexes can be narcissistic jerks. Generosity of spirit means you don’t just have your eyes on you but also on the needs of others. That makes you a bigger person.

I worked for two narcissists. A co worker whom I had known for 14 years betrayed me and sided with them. His betrayal hurt the most. After he retired he came by the office and said he’d been wrong to do that. It helped a bit but his betrayal still bothers me to this day.

The trouble is that it’s rare to find anyone who takes their confessing to the level your describing, in fact, you’ll be lucky if any of your offenders will show up to even say, “am sorry for what I did.” Most of the time, the amends just never comes. So I don’t look for them anymore. I look for the ones I need to make so I can have some peace within myself. Most people don’t want to look at themselves, it’s too painful and it’s much easier to look at the wrongs of someone else.

Bc of my Irish-American upbringing, & the belief in jinxes, family curses& other old wives’ tales, you’ll never hear me say, “Can it get any worse”?! Bc yes, yes it can & thanks to my superhuman (disabled at age 25, when I was only in First grade), never allowing herself or anyone else to say “I can’t”! Yes I can & yes I will!! Thank you to the village that raised me, bc in reality,we’re all just here to walk each other home. Be kind to yourself, others & animals. It pays dividends that are unmatched. ❤

Dr. Peterson’s first book is what got me through my divorce 4 years ago! I’m a middle aged, GenX Southern (US) woman who has been considered “permanently & legally disabled” due to two TBI’s over the course of 15 years…I was NOT on an upward trajectory & my closest friends would get depressed coming to see me. My only real solace was my two rescue dogs & two foster failures. I lost them all within 6 months & it was deafeningly lonely, & I turned to familiar vices to cope & then lost myself. So, I re-read everything f I could get my hands on by JP, including watching his old Toronto student lectures, classes & I slowly began making my bed again, despite waking up in pain every day. I started showing up first, for myself, then later, for my loved ones, many of whom I had lost bc of my covert heroic narc ex husband, my children’s paternal family & my own undoing. I have all that & more back now, through lots of humility, perseverance and frankly, just out of pure spite towards the ones who said I’d never make it. Well lookie here, here I am & what am I doing??! Making it!❤

This is why young women need to have strong male family influences in their life to help vet these issues in other men. I think it is something overlooked in modern dating for women. It is looked at as outdated and controlling. Or the quality father figure just isn’t present.

A vida é dura, cara. Certo.

For people who laugh at his tears: He starts getting tears because he really feels what he says, for example when he says word "pain" just a flashback of all the circumstances wherever he felt those hardships and pain come into mind, as a bundle of hundreds or thousands of thoughts, you don't think them word by word, but it provokes those emotions. I can say it as I have felt this to an extent. Sometimes very simple things bring tears and sometimes you don't cry even at hardest part of your life.
